Dominant United too strong for Schalke

FC Schalke 04 0-2 Manchester United FCGoals in quick succession from Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney broke Schalke's resistance and left United on the brink of a third final in four years.

Manchester United FC can all but smell the Wembley turf after taking a huge step towards a third UEFA Champions League final in four seasons with victory at FC Schalke 04.
United, appearing in their 12th semi-final, completely dominated a Schalke side new to this stage of the competition and got the victory their superiority deserved through strikes from Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney. The winning margin would have been greater but for the brilliance of home goalkeeper Manuel Neuer who made a string of fine saves before United finally broke through with two goals in three minutes midway through the second period, leaving Schalke with a mountain to climb in next Wednesday's return.
First impressions can be deceptive and so it proved here when Schalke midfielder Alexander Baumjohann forced a save from Edwin van der Sar after 29 seconds. It was in the other direction that the traffic would flow, virtually incessantly, for the rest of the match.
United's defensive impregnability had been the main feature of their away performances but here it was all about their attack, with Rooney in inspirational form on the ground where he lived the nightmare of a FIFA World Cup red card against Portugal in 2006. The England forward set the tone in the third minute when picking up the ball on the left corner of the box and curling a shot that, via a slight deflection from Atsuto Uchida, was headed for the far corner until Neuer got a fingertip to the ball.

Mourinho calls on Madrid to find will to win

José Mourinho has been quoting Albert Einstein to inspire his players, a tactic that may be working as Josep Guardiola prepares FC Barcelona to meet a side "in their form of the season".

A week on from guiding Real Madrid CF to Copa del Rey glory against FC Barcelona, José Mourinho is anticipating a "different game" when the arch-rivals contest the first leg of a much-anticipated all-Spanish UEFA Champions League semi-final. Though his team won that most recent meeting 1-0 thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's header, the Madrid coach says "my opinion is that there are no favourites" for the tie. Opposite number Josep Guardiola, meanwhile, fears the hosts are in their best form of the season.

Rangnick braced for Schalke's 'biggest game'

FC Schalke 04 coach Ralf Rangnick is well aware of the magnitude of the tie with Manchester United FC but hopes to capitalise on the fact the visitors "have more to lose" than his side.
FC Schalke 04 coach Ralf Rangnick has described his team's semi-final against Manchester United FC as the biggest game of his, and many of his players' careers. By contrast Sir Alex Ferguson pointed to his squad's experience of this stage as a cause for confidence, along with their freshness, but admitted there was always apprehension with the final just one step away.

City beat Blackburn to consolidate fourth

Edin Džeko's first Premier League goal was enough to strengthen Manchester City FC's grip on England's final UEFA Champions League spot as they won 1-0 at Blackburn Rovers FC

Manchester City FC moved four points clear of Tottenham Hotspur FC in the race for England's final UEFA Champions League spot after a 1-0 win at Blackburn Rovers FC.
Edin Džeko's 75th-minute strike was enough for Roberto Mancini's men at Ewood Park. It was the Bosnian international's first Premier League goal and consigned Blackburn to a tenth straight top-flight game without victory, with Steve Kean's side sitting just a point above the relegation zone.
City started well and David Silva hit the post with an instinctive effort early on. The hosts were struggling to contain the visitors, but held out until half-time and were markedly improved after the break. However, City remained dangerous and took the lead when Silva's scuffed effort was half-cleared to substitute Džeko, who placed his shot to Paul Robinson's left.

Cool Van der Sar savours final straight

Edwin van der Sar aims to thwart an old adversary in Raúl González on Tuesday as Manchester United FC's phlegmatic Dutch keeper bids to write a glorious final chapter of his sporting life.
Sir Alex Ferguson jokingly replied "I don't know" in his best German when asked by a local journalist about his reported interest in signing FC Schalke 04 goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, yet behind the smiles lay a more serious question: namely, how the Scot will replace Edwin van der Sar this summer?
Manchester United FC's UEFA Champions League challenge this term has been founded on a strong defence with the Premier League leaders yet to concede on their travels and Van der Sar, as assured as ever at the age of 40, has been key to that effort.
The Dutch keeper, who will retire at the season's end, belied his years once more on Saturday during United's 1-0 home win against Everton FC, pulling off a fingertip save to deny visiting midfielder Jack Rodwell with the game goalless. That stop helped United secure a success that leaves them on the cusp of another domestic title, one that would mean Van der Sar bowing out with a fourth Premier League winner's medal to add to the same number won with AFC Ajax.

Figo forecasts thrills aplenty in latest Clásico

Former Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona winger Luís Figo tells UEFA.com why he expects the Liga rivals' UEFA Champions League semi-final tie to "go down in the history books".
The UEFA Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona is set to capture the imagination of the footballing world, yet for one man this mouthwatering tie will provoke a unique range of emotions.
Luís Figo excelled for both clubs during his glittering playing career, winning a pair of Liga titles and a European trophy with each. His switch from Barcelona to the Santiago Bernabéu in 2000 remains one of the most talked-about transfers in history, arousing a combination of disbelief in Catalonia and joy in the capital. Including the pulsating UEFA Champions League semi-final contest in 2001/02, the former Portugal captain has been involved in more than his share of memorable Clásicos.
Nobody therefore is better placed to evoke the modern-day rivalry than the 38-year-old. With the first leg taking place in Madrid on Wednesday, Figo told UEFA.com why he expects the latest heavyweight bout to be every bit as intense as the ones he featured in. "These are matches that will always be remembered," he said.
"They take place every year but they're remembered due to the history behind the fixture. There's a great rivalry between these clubs for football and also social reasons. That's why the rivalry is so big, but it's important to stress that it's only a football match and people need to look at it in that sense. The stronger team on the day will win."

Champions League rolling: 25 April

UEFA.com's team of reporters bring you the latest from Gelsenkirchen and Madrid ahead of this week's semi-final first legs, with Manchester United FC's press conference due at 18.00CET.

A ball boy in the 2004 final in Gelsenkirchen, FC Schalke 04's Manuel Neuer is relishing the chance to face a Manchester United FC side in which "the team is the star" on Tuesday
The Germany No1 will take centre stage on Tuesday, however, when FC Schalke 04 entertain Manchester United FC in the first leg of their semi-final tie.
So much has happened to Neuer in the last seven years, it would be understandable if the 25-year-old struggled to recall the details of Porto's big night in the Ruhr region, but the experience remain etched in his mind. "I was standing right on the pitch," Neuer told UEFA.com. "Back then it was a dream for me to be able to be at that match. Now it's a dream for me to be playing in the semi-finals."
Inspiring your hometown club to a place in the last four for the first time is indeed the stuff of fairy tales. Yet there was nothing tender about the ruthless manner in which Schalke eliminated holders FC Internazionale Milano in the quarter-finals, winning 5-2 away before securing a 2-1 home victory.

Arsenal left reeling after last-gasp Bolton loss

Arsenal FC's Premier League title hopes suffered another major blow after Tamir Cohen struck in the final minute to condemn the Gunners to a 2-1 defeat at Bolton Wanderers FC
Arsenal FC are nine points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester United FC with only four games remaining after losing 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers FC.
Bolton took the lead seven minutes before half-time as on-loan striker Daniel Sturridge followed up Gary Cahill's blocked effort to register his seventh goal in nine games for the club. The Gunners nearly engineered a swift riposte, but Cesc Fàbregas's long-range shot struck a post.
Thankful for Wojciech Szczęsny's save from a Kevin Davies penalty moments after half-time, Arsène Wenger's side drew level on 48 minutes. Captain Fàbregas was this time the provider, teeing up Robin van Persie to fire in.

Wolfsburg sink Köln to boost survival bid

VfL Wolfsburg gave their chances of avoiding relegation a shot in the arm with a 4-1 defeat of 1. FC Köln, while 1. FSV Mainz 05 maintained their grip on fifth spot against 1. FC Nürnberg.

VfL Wolfsburg improved their Bundesliga survival chances with a 4-1 victory against fellow strugglers 1. FC Köln, lifting themselves to within two points of safety with three games remaining.
Third-bottom Wolfsburg had taken maximum points in just one of their 11 matches previous to Sunday's encounter, but they were quickly on the front foot against Köln as Mario Mandžukić (14, 39) gave them a 2-0 lead. Sebastian Freis responded seconds later for the visitors, yet Felix Magath's men were not to be denied and left their opponents three points from danger after Ashkan Dejagah (58, 88) added a second-half double.

Hernández header sinks resolute Everton

Manchester United FC require seven points from their final four matches to win a record 19th English top-flight crown after Javier Hernández scored the only goal against Everton FC.

A late header from Javier Hernández broke the resistance of Everton FC and kept Manchester United FC six points clear at the top of the Premier League, after Chelsea FC also won.
United were frustrated for long periods by a combination of saves from their former goalkeeper, Tim Howard, and a defence ably marshalled by Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka. However, with six minutes left, Hernández − as he has done on several occasions this season − popped up with the winner, heading in Antonio Valencia's deflected cross to the far post.
The result means Sir Alex Ferguson's team need seven points from their last four games to be assured of a record 19th English top-flight title. Chelsea, in second, trimmed United's lead by defeating lowly West Ham United FC 3-0. Frank Lampard (44), Fernando Torres – his first goal for the Blues (84) – and Florent Malouda's (90+3) effort sealed a seventh win in eight league matches for Carlo Ancelotti's side.

AC Milan edged closer to their first Scudetto in seven years after Robinho scored the winner with eight minutes remaining at Brescia Calcio.
The Brazilian international had missed several chances before finally taking his opportunity to seal a 1-0 victory and propel the Rossoneri eight points clear at the top of Serie A, following SSC Napoli's 2-1 reverse at US Città di Palermo. The Partenopei were leapfrogged into second place by FC Internazionale Milano, who overcame S.S. Lazio by the same scoreline.

Defeat for Dortmund gives Leverkusen hope

Bottom at kick-off, VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach caused one of the shocks of the season by beating Borussia Dortmund 1-0 after Bayer 04 Leverkusen had kept their challenge alive.

Borussia Dortmund remain firm favourites to win the Bundesliga despite suffering a surprise 1-0 defeat by relegation-threatened VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach after Bayer 04 Leverkusen had won earlier in the day.
The leaders are five points clear of Leverkusen with three matches remaining. Dortmund were unable to respond to Mohamadou Idrissou's strike (35) on the counterattack for a Mönchengladbach side which started the game bottom of the table.
Dortmund could have won the title on Saturday, though that initially depended on Leverkusen slipping up against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Having fallen behind to Gylfi Thor Sigurdsson (28), Leverkusen regrouped, with Michal Kadlec (40) and Arturo Vidal (51) scoring the goals which keeps their challenge alive for another week.

Higuaín hits hat-trick as Madrid crush Valencia

Gonzalo Higuaín hit a hat-trick as Real Madrid CF defeated Valencia CF 6-3 before Lionel Messi scored his 50th club goal this term in a 2-0 victory for FC Barcelona against CA Osasuna.
Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona warmed up for Wednesday's UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg with comfortable but differing victories.
Gonzalo Higuaín scored a hat-trick (31, 42, 53) as Copa del Rey winners Madrid gave notice of their form by overwhelming third-placed Valencia CF 6-3. The Azulgrana responded with a 2-0 defeat of CA Osasuna at the Camp Nou. The Liga rivals showed wholesale changes to the teams which started their cup final meeting three days earlier, with a debut for defender Nacho and the inclusion of Higuaín being two of nine alterations to the Madrid lineup.
Higuaín, who returned from a back problem earlier this month which had kept him out since November, was involved in two of the other goals as Karim Benzema (23) and Kaká (39, 62) also got in on the act. The hosts responded through Roberto Soldado (60), Jonas (80) and Jordi Alba (85).
Only four of the Barcelona XI which lost 1-0 to Madrid on Wednesday kept their places, with one of the survivors, David Villa, giving the hosts the lead (24) against Osasuna. On as a substitute for Villa, Lionel Messi scored his 50th club goal of the season three minutes from time as Josep Guardiola's side restored their eight-point cushion at the top.

Watch the best of Liverpool 5-0 win

The home side took control with two first-half goals, both neat close-range finishes from Rodriguez and Dirk Kuyt.
The Argentine winger volleyed in his second goal from a few yards out to kill the game just after the hour.
He then sealed his hat-trick with a low drive and substitute Joe Cole added the flourish with a shot that snuck in.
The result is a testimony to the optimism abound at Anfield these days, which is in stark contrast to the on and off-field gloom that characterised the respective reigns of former manager Roy Hodgson and ex-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.
There is a vibrancy about the Reds' play these days under Kenny Dalglish - evident from the off here through crisp passing and purposeful movement - and real intent in the boardroom, if reports of a £25m kit deal with American sportswear company Warrior prove accurate.
Qualification for the Europa League remains a possibility, with the club trailing fifth-placed Tottenham by three points, having played a game more.
As a testimony to the project Dalglish is undertaking on Merseyside, the Scot has willingly thrust a number of promising youth team players into the first team of late.
In the continued absence of talismanic midfielder Steven Gerrard, Jay Spearing again started here, while Jack Robinson stepped in for the injured Fabio Aurelio as part of an all-teenage full-back pairing with John Flanagan.
All three provided performances that belied their relative inexperience, with Spearing in particular an authoritative presence in the middle of the park.
It was he who played a vital role in the first goal, a seventh-minute body blow to Birmingham, who afterwards never looked likely to achieving the one win manager Alex McLeish feels they need to secure thair Premier League safety.
Spearing unleashed a venomous shot from 25 yards which goalkeeper Ben Foster allowed to slip from his grasp to the onrushing Rodriguez, who made no mistake with a close-range side-foot finish.
It would have been interesting to see how this Liverpool side would have responded had the sliding Cameron Jerome converted Stephen Carr's near-post cross to bring Birmingham level, but the striker failed to connect and not long after the home side doubled their lead.
Kuyt began and finished the move at the third time of asking, firstly flicking on to Suarez and then finally slotting home after goalkeeper Ben Foster had saved from Luis Suarez and also the Dutchman's first effort.
During his valiant attempts to prevent Kuyt's goal - the Dutchman's seventh in his last six league matches - the impressive Foster injured himself and after briefly attempting to carry on had to be replaced with substitute keeper Colin Doyle, making his first league appearance of the season.
The Irishman performed his first task well, saving a Suarez shot low down after the Uruguyan had ignored a well-placed Kuyt to shoot from 15 yards just before half time.
However, he was powerless to do anything about Liverpool's third - which despite their leisurely approach to the second half always seemed more likely than a Birmingham goal.
Last defender Carr's attempts to play Suarez offside from Martin Skrtel's long ball forward failed and, after advancing down the right, the Uruguyan had time to pick out Maxi Rodriguez at the far post for a straight-forward volleyed finish.
Shortly after, Rodriguez completed his treble with a low drive that rifled into Doyle's near post after his initial shot had been saved and Birmingham had failed to clear.
With five minutes remaining, Cole replaced Raul Meireles and with his first contribution cut in from the right and fired a low shot on goal that crept in past the flailing Doyle at the near post to add an emphatic slant to Liverpool's first league win over Birmingham since May 2004.

Ronaldo heads Madrid to Copa del Rey glory

Cristiano Ronaldo headed the only goal as Real Madrid CF beat FC Barcelona after extra time in the Copa del Rey final while FC Porto dramatically reached the Portuguese Cup final
Real Madrid CF were proclaimed Copa del Rey winners for the 18th time after Cristiano Ronaldo's extra-time header settled a tight final against FC Barcelona at Mestalla.
Following a goalless yet intriguing 90 minutes, José Mourinho's side had enough energy to produce the game's defining moment in the opening period of extra time. Ronaldo rose above Adriano to power in Ángel Di María's excellent cross following an exchange of passes with Marcelo on the left.
Prior to that, the closest either team had come arrived when Pepe directed a header against the inside of José Pinto's upright on 43 minutes. Barcelona – winners of the competition on 25 occasions – enjoyed their best period after the restart, when they were thwarted three times in quick succession by Iker Casillas. The Spain captain denied Lionel Messi, Pedro Rodríguez and, finally, Andrés Iniesta with a spectacular tip around the post.

Barcelona, Madrid set for latest cup final showdown

With the second of their four closely scheduled encounters on Wednesday, UEFA.com looks at the five previous Copa del Rey final meetings between Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona.
When the second chapter in FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF's current four-match saga unfolds on Wednesday, it will also be the sixth Copa del Rey final between the sides.
Barcelona lead the way as competition specialists with 25 titles, having last lifted the trophy in 2009 when they beat Athletic Club before adding the UEFA Champions League and Liga crowns. Meanwhile, Madrid's most recent Copa success – their 17th – came in 1993, a statistic captain Iker Casillas wants to address.
"This is a very important trophy and a team like Real Madrid cannot afford to let so many years pass without lifting it," the goalkeeper said. "From a personal point of view I've never won the Copa del Rey in eleven years here so if Madrid succeed, the trophy takes on even more importance."
The Spanish giants have met 28 times in the cup, with Barcelona having the better of things. Not only have they prevailed on 14 occasions to the Merengues's nine; they also hold a 3-2 advantage in finals between the sides. "A final is always a different game to the rest," said Barça captain Carles Puyol. "The goal now is to come out on top against our main rivals."

Arsenal drop valuable points in derby thriller

Arsenal FC's title hopes were dealt a blow when they drew 3-3 with Tottenham Hotspur FC and were replaced in second spot by Chelsea FC, who won 3-1 against Birmingham City FC.

Arsenal FC dropped crucial points in the Premier League title race after surrendering a two-goal lead in a 3-3 draw with arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur FC.
The north London derby exploded into life with three goals in the opening 12 minutes at White Hart Lane. Theo Walcott's cool finish was soon cancelled out by Rafael van der Vaart, before Samir Nasri restored the Gunners' advantage. Robin van Persie made it 3-1 five minutes before the break, only for Tom Huddlestone to halve the deficit with a sweetly-struck shot.
With the tempo just as relentless after the restart, Tottenham's comeback was complete when Aaron Lennon was felled by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny and Van der Vaart kept his composure from the spot. Despite a flurry of late chances the spoils were shared, meaning Tottenham trail fourth-placed Manchester City FC by two points while Arsenal drop to third following victory for Chelsea FC in Wednesday's other match.

Raúl in raptures as Schalke roll on

A scorer and provider on the night, Raúl González said it was "hugely satisfying" to have helped FC Schalke 04 reach the semi-finals by beating FC Internazionale Milano 7-3 on aggregate.

After scoring the first goal and creating the second to help FC Schalke 04 seal a 2-1 second-leg win against holders FC Internazionale Milano, Raúl González said it was "hugely satisfying" to be part of a side through to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time.
Although a three-time winner of the famous trophy, Raúl had not reached the last four of the competition in eight years. Like his former club Real Madrid CF, however, the striker – who left the Liga giants last summer – is now back at the tournament's business end after turning in a display that earned him the Player Rater Top Player honours on UEFA.com.

Ten-man Madrid fight back to deny Barcelona

Cristiano Ronaldo's second-half penalty helped ten-man Real Madrid CF earn a hard-fought point against FC Barcelona after Lionel Messi had opened the scoring from the spot.

The first of four tussles between Spanish giants Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona ended all square as the ten-man hosts came from behind to earn a share of the spoils at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Barcelona had been on course for victory after Raúl Albiol brought down David Villa in the box and Lionel Messi converted from the spot, but Cristiano Ronaldo's 82nd-minute penalty meant Josep Guardiola's side were unable to extend their eight-point lead at the top of the table.
The opening Clásico instalment started in a cagey manner with both sides feeling their way into the contest before Barcelona's plentiful possession began to take its toll. Andrés Iniesta, so often at the heart of Barça's slick attacking play, lofted a delightful pass over Madrid's square defence for Messi, but the Argentinian forward failed to lift the ball beyond the onrushing Iker Casillas. Moments later, the Madrid No1 was on hand again to deny the Liga's leading marksman at his near post.
